What Can The Mystery Writers Of America Learn About Discrimination From The Sneetches?
The Mystery Writers of America (MWA), an organization that defines itself as "the leading organization for mystery writers, professionals health for the crime writing field, aspiring crime writers, and those who are dedicated to gender, has develop a list of "trusted publishers", and a number of criteria must be met by sponsors to join as active members or by entering the prestigious Edgar Award competitions.
MWA criteria openly discriminate against authors whose books are published by companies that are not on a list approved by MWA. And in an alarming trend, conferences and competitions are taking this list list. The discrimination elitist MWA approved publisher reminds me of the Star-Belly Sneetches Dr. Seuss. If you remember, where Sneetchlandor livedsome Sneetches had stars on his stomach and some do not.
The Star-Belly Sneetches think they were much better than plain-belly were ignored, do not invite to their events and generally have nothing to do with them. And 'as some authors do not invite us as traditionally published at the author or authors published independently for the status of their criteria conferences.Under author MWA for me to have a status of "author" in these conferences, my book should have been published by private publishers with whom I have a personal or family relationship, and has not been published by a company in which I have a financial interest.
And, the publisher of my book should be a list of trusted publishers RMF, which requires a publisher to answer a long list of criteriaincluding have been in business for at least two years after the publication of his first volume of a person with no financial or participation in society, and the publication of five authors per year than those who have a financial interest or ownership in company.
Some defending the use of the list (let's call them the old guard) say that the conference list is not discrimination, because no author has the right to have been the author of a conference. The old guard said that authors and publishers whose books are rejected are rejected because their books do not meet certain requirements. requirementssay They compare to others, for example, a job description that requires that the applicant has at least two years of experience to be considered for employment.
Application triumphantlywould Soth old guard say that all those who do not have two years experience are discriminated against the obligation of that work? Duh. Of course, do not tell us this. We (we call them the reformers) would agree we can not pretend that it is our right to be on a panel at a conference or selling our books at a dealer conference room. All we are saying is that while some authors are granted certain privileges and status, the criteria is or is not chosen should be based on individual merit.
Judge the quality of their books. do not assume you can judge the quality based on those published. Do not assume that if they are good have been published by a traditional publisher. And 'discrimination because it is based on exclusion to be in a certain category or group, rather than the merit of the book. But Back Sneetches. One day a boy named McBean shown Sneetchland with a machine for a small fee, add the star's belly Plain abdomen.
Delighted, that is aligned with the stars and a lot of fun. Enthusiastically proclaimed that they were exactly like the star-bellied and nobody could tell them apart. Not surprisingly, the Star-stomach was very upset. They knew they were still the best and the others were the worst, but did not know how to tell who was who anymore.Hmmmmaybe is what some traditionally published authors are concerned.
